Ugly night at Thole Field, as Vikettes stumble to Beckman, 8-3

VINTON – The rollercoaster season for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes hit what was – hopefully – its low point Wednesday night when the Vikettes were pounded at home by Dyersville Beckman, 8-3. The loss dropped the Vikettes 7-6 on the season, but left them winless (0-4) at Thole Field for season. And it was tough loss, as the Blazers entered the game with a mark of 2-9.

Vinton 11 & Under Black team takes 1st Place

Vinton's 1st place team beats Mount Pleasant Panthers. The Vinton 11 & Under Black team took 1st Place at the Marion Indians June Jam Tournament, on June 5th and 6th at Lowe Park. They beat the Mt. Pleasant Panthers in the Championship. Vinton 12 & U team enjoying successes as State Tourney approaches

Vinton 12 and Under team won CR tourney; prepares for State contest. The Vinton 12 and Under USSSA baseball team won a tournament over the Memorial Day weekend and is now preparing for the State USSSA tourney in Des Moines the last weekend in June. The team finished second in the Vinton tournament a few weeks ago. In the CR tournament, Nick Hyland and Tyler Stueck were honored as team MVPs. Team

After second game loss at CPU, Vikettes bounce back Tuesday to sweep BP

Following a disheartening loss in the nightcap of Monday’s WaMaC Conference doubleheader at Center Point, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes bounced back Tuesday night to sweep a pair from Belle Plaine. The Vikettes dropped Monday’s nightcap, 8-2. They led the game 2-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, but the Stormin’ Pointers came back for two, then blitzed the Vikettes for five in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game open.

Hill sisters are opponents, but only for one night each season

Liz (left) and Sarah Hill shake hands before Game 2 of V-S/ CPU game in Center Point. Over the years, sisters Liz and Sarah Hill made a lot of history for the Vinton-Shellsburg softball program. Tuesday night, they made a little more.   After four years as teammates for the Vikettes, and one season (so far) as teammates at Mount Mercy College, the Hills -- the daughters of Scott and Vicky Hill of Shellsburg -- were opposite dugouts Monday night as opposing assistant coaches.

Lebeda, Burroughs lead Red Cedar Shooters at State Trap Shooting event

The VSHS Red Cedar Shooters placed third in their second season. The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team competed at the Iowa State Trap Championships at the Cedar Falls Gun Club on Saturday June 5th.     This year, teams from 75 schools participated with 527 individuals competing on 96 five member squads.   Each shooter shot 100 targets:  50 from the 16yd distance and 50 from the 19yd distance.

Pitching gems for Noren, Seaton lead Vikings, Vikettes to victory at CPU

Lindsey Noren and Kody Seaton led V-S to victory with complete games at CPU Monday night. Lindsey Noren pitched the Vikettes to victory in Game 1 at Center Point, where V-S defeated CPU, 3-2 in the opener of a varsity double header. At the same time, Kody Seaton baffled CPU batters as the Vikings scored a 12-2 5-inning win.  But CPU won both Game 2 contests, with the girls winning 8-2 and the boys winning 6-3.

Comeback bid fails as Vikings lose to Monticello 11-8 at Veterans Stadium

Starting pitcher Gunner Tranel is introduced as Vikings play at Veterans Stadium Friday. The Vinton-Shellburg baseball team came up short in its attempt for another come-from-behind win on Friday night.  In a varsity game against Monticello, the Vikings were down 11-8 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. They loaded the bases, but were unable to score.  The loss was just the Vikings' second of the season.

Kositzky gets first career feature win in Vinton

Bill Whalen Jr. Vinton Sport Compact Winner Rainy weather held off long enough for the races to continue in Vinton Sunday, June 6. Bill Whalen won the Sport Compact Feature. Austin Kaplin was one Sport Modified Feature winner. Kent Kositzky won his first career feature in the othe Sport Mod feature. Jeff Mueller won the stock car feature and celebrated with his parents in Victory Lane.
