Stanek gets first win Vinton; Week 2 was first points race of season here

V-S girls soccer team loses to Mount Vernon

  The Vinton-Shellsburg girls soccer team lost to Mount Vernon 6-1, last Thursday. “Kylie Fisher, a senior, was our goal scorer and she scored on a breakaway in the first half. The play started with a beautiful pass from Kaitlin McAbee to Clare Cooling who then sent the ball behind the defense for Kylie to run onto. On the other end of the field, Chelsea Brown made 17 saves,” said Coach Alana Svensen.

V-S boys take second at Pirate Relays; Hudson first

  The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team won second place in the Pirate Relays in Hudson on Friday, April 9. The Vikings had 92.5 total points, second to host Hudson which had 153. Union took third with 86.75 points. “Overall, I would say that this was by far our best performance of the year,” said VS Track Coach Aric Chvala.   “Most athletes performed the best that they had all year long, and that is all that you can ask for.

2010 season begins at BC Speedway; Gustin wins Modifieds, Dulin in Stock cars

VSHS winter athletic squads honored for academic achievements

  During each activity season in Iowa, high school students are not only recognized for their accomplishments as performers or as athletes, but also recognized for their efforts in the classroom. The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is proud of the efforts our students put forth in the classroom. During the winter activity season, the following teams or groups have achieved state-wide academic recognition for their efforts.

Benton County Speedway opens Sunday with Frostbuster special

  By Bill Martin VINTON, Iowa (March 29) – Opening night at Benton County Speedway features the third of three weekend IMCA Frostbuster specials. The Sunday, April 4 program at Vinton is headlined by IMCA Modifieds in a $1,000 to win main event. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods vie for a $300 check, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks chase $250 in first place money and top prize for the Mach-1 Sport Compacts is $125.

AmeriCorps members partner with Special Olympics

AmeriCorps volunteers will help VS Special Olympians at Regional Track Meet in CR on April 17. The Vinton-Shellsburg Special Olympians are preparing to send two dozen athletes to Cedar Rapids for the Regional Track and Field Meet at Coe College on April 17. Along with their parents and coaches, the local Special Olympians will have another group of helpers: Volunteers from the Vinton AmeriCorps NCCC campus. During a meeting this week at VS Middle School, the volunteers met with coaches and a few of the athletes.

Cornhusker League gives VS baseball players spring training

It's too soon for official Iowa high school baseball practice, but the Cornhuskers league gives several area teams, including Vinton-Shellsburg, a chance to meet on weekends for a few games. On Sunday afternoon, the Vinton team played a double header on their home field against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The visitors won both games, but the day helped players shake off the winter rust.

Vinton Shellsburg Special Olympians Take The Gold

By Brian Larkin The Vinton Shellsburg Special Olympics Basketball team took the gold in two events at the Special Olympics Iowa Midwinter Games at the U of I Fieldhouse in Iowa City.  Zach Kramer gained first place in the Basketball Skills competition.  The 5 on 5 Coed Basketball team defeated the Atlantic Trojans by a score of 38-25.  Nearly 300 athletes competed in basketball, power lifting, cheerleading and basketball skills events.
