V-S Special Olympics athletes compete in Cedar Rapids

Shelby Arp carries the torch at the beginning of the Special Olympics Regional at Coe College. The Vinton-Shellsburg Special Olympics team sent 26 competitors to the Regional meet at Coe College this weekend and came home with 19 first place wins.  The team will attend the Iowa Special Olympics event in May at Iowa State, and those 19 first place winners will compete in Ames. Also competing from the area were several others, including the Cedar Valley Ranch, the Iowa Braille School and Vinton Independent, which included the Young family.

V-S girls win over Jesup in home dual golf meet

 By Jeff Holmes VINTON – The Vinton-Shellsburg girls’ golf team enjoyed a little home-cooking Thursday night as they rolled a 223-235 home dual-meet victory over Jesup Thursday night at the Vinton Country Club. Consistency was the hallmark for the Vikettes, who were paced by runner-up medalist Cara Hach’s round of 55. Kelsey Mahood added a 56, Erin Randall a 57 and Hannah Looney at 58 to round out the Vikette scoring.

Dyson shares gold medal as V-S boys take third in home golf meet

  By Jeff Holmes Jake Dyson shared medalist honors, but the Vinton-Shellsburg boys’ golf team finished third Thursday in a WaMaC Conference triangular at Wildcat Country Club. Marion won the meet with a score of 167, while Independence was second was second with a 177 and Vikings third with a 185. Dyson fired a 39 to share medalist honors with Kyle Christensen of Independence.

Red Cedar Shooters begin second year with 12 new members on team of 17

The increasing popularity of high school trap shooting is apparent in the numbers: • The numbers of high school trap shooting teams competing throughout the state. • The numbers of participants on those teams. • The amount of support those teams are receiving from the community, in terms of donations for the program. The Vinton-Shellsburg trap shooting team has seen rising numbers in both its participants and its supporters, said coach Brendan Knudtson.

Viking golfers take third at La Porte City

By Jeff Holmes Coach Scott Tandy’s Vinton-Shellsburg boys’ golfers finished third in a non-conference quadrangular Tuesday. The Vikings finished with a nine-hole team score of 192. Union won the meet with a 160, while Don Bosco was second with a 174 and Dunkerton was fourth with a 199.  Don Bosco’s Carson Barron was meet medalist with a 33, while Union’s Mike Wauters was runner-up with a 39.

Hammer wins long jump; V-S girls finish seventh at Iowa Valley

By Jeff Holmes  The Vinton-Shellsburg girls’ track team picked up one gold medal and seventh-place team finish Monday night at Iowa Valley’s Ruth Ahrens’ Invitational. Vikette junior Erika Hammer picked up a first-place finish in the long jump, as the junior went 14 feet, five inches to outdistance to the field in the event.

Vikings take third place at Iowa Valley Track meet

By Jeff Holmes A pair of first-place finishes and good balance led to a third-place tie for the Vinton-Shellsburg Viking boys’ track team Tuesday night at Iowa Valley’s Ruth Ahrens’ Invitational. Coach Aric Chvala’s Vikings finished deadlocked for third with Clear Creek-Amana with 80 points. Solon won the meet with 137 points, while Benton Community was second with 83.

VS girls lose to 7th-ranked Solon, but JV team wins, 1-0

  By Jeff Holmes SOLON – The Vinton-Shellsburg girls’ soccer team went up against a buzzsaw Tuesday night, as Coach Alana Svensen’s Vikettes dropped a 10-0 decision to 7th-ranked Solon in WaMaC Conference action. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Spangler had 11 saves for the Vikettes, who dropped to 0-3 for the year. The Vikette junior varsity picked up their first win of the season Tuesday, as they edged the Spartans, 1-0 on Erika Hammer’s first-half breakaway goal.
