Area children wrap up their first week of school

Tilford Elementary was ready for students as they arrived for classes on Wednesday. Area children arrived at school during the hottest week that we've had for a long time! Wednesday morning found children and sometimes parents arriving at Tilford Elementary and the teachers ready to welcome the students back to school Several arrived ready to take on the day. Others needed a little reassurance. But all were soon smiling as soon as they adjusted and found their friends!Here are just a few photos from Tilford Elementary.

Peter Teahen of the Fellowship of Flying Rotarians addresses Vinton Lions Club

Vinton Lions hosted guest speaker Peter Teahen sharing his and John Ockenfels' efforts to raise awareness and efforts to eradicate Polio and provide vaccinations around the world. Peter Teahen’s program took us on an adventure of belief in a dream, belief in the support of family and friends, belief in his single-engine Cessna T210M airplane and the belief in eradicating Polio forever throughout the world.

VGH Jeanette Miller Scholarships Awarded

Rebecca Haines Congratulations to VGH Staff members, Maddux Erhardt, Reanna Wilhelm and Rebecca Haines, awarded Jeanette Miller Nursing Scholarships. We celebrate their accomplishments and efforts in pursuing and furthering their nursing education.Maddux is attending Northeast Iowa Community College pursuing her LPN degree. Maddux works in Acute Care and Emergency Room.

Boomfest and Boomtown Events this weekend

Saturday, August 26 will be packed with a ton of fun activities for those who dare to venture out this weekend. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. the Vinton Kiwanis will host their annual 5K Fun Run/Walk. Meeting on the east side of the courthouse the race will begin. (Note again that the Amazing Race part of the competition has been canceled.)From 9:00 a.

Area Student Assists the local Fire Department

The Vinton Fire Department recognized an area student for helping to make their lives a little easier. In a post on Facebook the department thanked Wes McKenna for his help in designing a revolving tool holder that fits in the side of the fire truck. Here's the story!As school resumes this week we want to extend our deepest appreciation and hearty congratulations to one Vinton-Shellsburg High School student who had a busy summer helping us out on a special project!Wes McKenna (son of current VFD Captain Dan McKenna) has been practicing his welding skills for the last several years and when we purchased our new TNT Rescue Systems, Inc.

Pourville adds Mural to the Alleyscape

Some of the artists who helped to create the mural When Vinton was fortunate enough to add an art studio to its main street, most of us didn't know what a blessing it would be to the community. While art is something that only a few dabble in Dandeena Schadle has made Pourville Art Studio and Gallery something for everyone. She offers local artists the ability to share their creations with the public in a setting that is fun to explore.

It was so hot in Vinton today that...

Well, I don't think the heat had anything to do with it but I'm not not saying that either!With temperatures hovering around 97° the Vinton Fire Department responded to a mower catching on fire on Tuesday afternoon. The fire was on West 13th St. next to Pioneer and west of Kwik Star. It took only minutes to put the fire out, fortunately. There were no injuries.

The unscientific State Fair Straw Poll promotes voter registration and participation Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Raymond Wagner received the most votes in each of their political parties in Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s 2023 State Fair Straw Poll. Throughout the Iowa State Fair, more than 4,700 votes were cast for preferred presidential candidates at the Iowa Secretary of State’s booth.
