Fire damages condos at 1507 W. 3rd St. in Vinton

Saturday morning: The roof has melted above the condo and can be seen slightly in this photo Friday night the Vinton Fire Department responded to a call at 1507 W. 3rd St. in Vinton to the condos located at this location. School Supplies to be collected and given out free of charge

School supplies will be collected from anyone that would like to donate. Supplies should be delivered to the First Christian Church by August 14. The church is located at: 1209 W 13th St, Vinton.Supplies will be distributed at the First Christian Church FREE and on a first come, first served basis until supplies are gone. Call LaNette Parker to make an appointment to receive supplies 319-521-1496.

Information for those who need a cooling station this afternoon

Please check on your friends and especially the elderly or those with breathing issues this week. Make sure they are all in a cool location and aren't trying to "tough it out" with broken air conditioning or without fans.Due to the extreme temperatures this week, the old Revolution Church currently known as The Well, located at 417 1st Ave in Vinton will be open for individuals who need a cool place to hang out.

Vinton Monuments workshop draws residents from five states

Fifty people descended on Maplewood Cemetery on Tuesday for the Vinton Monuments / Atlas Preservation cemetery preservation workshop. Jonathan Appell of Atlas Preservation in Southington,Connecticut lead the workshop. Participants had an opportunity to perform hands-on cleaning, resetting of monuments and repair of monuments thought to never stand again.

Painting the Town Red (and Yellow)

Chad Newton of the Vinton Water Department painting one of the hydrants along C Ave. There are many tasks that the water department attends to. One that I never thought about was the upkeep of the fire hydrants. To be honest I've never spent a lot of time thinking about fire hydrants at all. Not their color nor the fact that they need to be painted. Until right in front of me, a hydrant was getting its new coat of paint. Then I noticed a lot of hydrants along C Ave.

Virginia Gay Hospital to receive $466,000 grant from the USDA Rural Development

The USDA Rural Development has approved a grant of $466,600.00 to Virginia Gay Hospital. The investment will be used to help Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This project will replace lost revenues caused by pandemic-related challenges. Once completed, the project will provide the hospital with financial resources to better serve the residents of this rural Benton County community and the surrounding rural areas.

Hope Rogers, relative of Frank Lloyd Wright, shares family stories in new book

Hope Rogers of Vinton, at her typewriter as she wrote her first book about her grandfather In 1976, a Vinton resident authored her book, "Grandpa Wright." Using some of the information from her great grandmother Lizzie Wright Heller's memoir. Growing up in Belle Plaine, Hope Sankot Rogers' fondest memories were of the time she spent with her Grandma Lizzie. Recently Hope authorized Wright scholars Jason Loper and Michael Schreiber to republish her book on their website.

Pate’s Iowa Businesses Against Trafficking Program, Finalist for National Award

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s Iowa Businesses Against Trafficking (IBAT) initiative was nationally recognized this week by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) as one of three finalists for the IDEAS Award. In all, Iowa’s hospitals provided 145,252 jobs statewideLast year, Virginia Gay Hospital generated 578 jobs that added $ 29,039,574 to Benton county’s economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association. Virginia Gay Hospital expenses of $ 56,837,648 account for 6.30% of Benton County gross domestic product.Michele Schoonover, CEO stated, Virginia is proud to have served the residents of the surrounding area for the last 100 years.

Statewide Speed Awareness Day July 26

 Iowa’s 2023 daily traffic fatality count is over 20% higher than the 5-year average: an alarming trend. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is teaming up with law enforcement to keep drivers and passengers safe by raising awareness about the dangers of speeding and urging drivers to obey speed limits.On July 26, Iowa will join Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas for a Speed Awareness Campaign.
