Vikettes donate to veterans, prepare for Pink Night fund-raiser Friday

Vikette senior Maci Griffith and the Vikettes present a check to Toni Parizek for the Veterans Fund. The Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball team continues its community outreach efforts. On Tuesday, the girls presented a $1,200 check to the Benton County Veterans Assistance fund from their Hall of Pride "Nets for Vets" game in November.   Then on Friday, the Vikettes will honor breast cancer survivors and participate in a variety of fund-raising projects during the annual Pink Night.

Vikings record 29 new best times at home swim meet vs. Grinnell

Last night the Vinton-Shellsburg swim team battled Grinnell in their second of three home swim meets.  Despite registering perhaps their strongest performance of the season the young Vikings fell to Grinnell 66-28.  The evening began with the first of what would be many close races.  The 160 Medley Relay team of sophomore Tyler Hekel, junior Ryan Levis, freshman Isaac Lindauer and the team’s lone senior Caleb Kruckenberg battled the Grinnell A team neck and neck the entire race.

Rivalry week: VS loses at Benton, travels to CPU on Friday

The Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team played Benton evenly for three quarters Tuesday night in Van Horne, but Benton outscored the Vikings 17-9 in the fourth for a 53-41 victory.  Tyler Stueck led the Vikings with 13. Senior Latham Cooper led Benton with 15.  The Vikings are now 8-4 on the season. They will travel to Center Point-Urbana this Friday.

How the Cyclones can claim to be No. 1

Cheer up, Cyclone fans. I’ve got some good news for you. Sure, 75 percent of last season was as disappointing as the Rose Bowl was for Hawkeye fans, but I’ve got some news that should inspire Coach Campbell and the rest of the Crimson and Gold Nation for 2016 and beyond. The next few lines may get monotonous, but then again you survived another long season, so you are probably prepared for motonony.

Hyland takes first at BC Invitational; Vikes 6th in team scoring

Nick Hyland continued his undefeated season, leading VS wrestlers at the Benton Invite. Nick Hyland continued his unbeaten wrestling season, winning the Benton Community Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational's 145-pound title on Saturday. Hyland was one of several Vikings to place in the tournament. The Vikes finished 6th in team scoring with 112 points in the 16-team contest. Hyland is currently ranked 7th in the state, at 138 pounds.

VAC swimmers do well at CRAA Winter Invite

Members of the Vinton Aquatic Club did well at the Cedar Rapids Aquatic Association Winter Invitational swim meet on Jan. 2-3, at Coe College. The VAC members won five first place medals in relay events, and more than 25 individual first-place medals during the competition. Seven-year-old Zoey Bresson scored 90 points to take second place in the 7-8 year-old girls division.

Wamac East leader Maquoketa ends Viking win streak

Tyler Stueck led the Vikings with 13 in Tuesday's loss vs. conference leader Maquoketa. The VS boys basketball team was expecting a challenge when they hosted Maquoketa on Tuesday. The Cardinals lead the Wamac East and have lost just once this season, by five points to Class 4A Davenport West. The Vikings built an early 13-4 lead, but the Cardinals quickly netted two 3-pointers and soon evened the score. The teams played close until the end.

Vinton-Shellsburg Bowling takes on Western Dubuque

Vinton-Shellsburg vs. Western Dubuque  12/22/15 The varsity girls lost this evening to a very talented W. Dubuque team.  The score was VS 2538 and W. Dubuque 2752 but they shot over one hundred pins above average.  The girls were led by senior, Sierra Goodell who had her personal best game of 229 and series of 409. Vikings extend win streak to 6 with big home win over Dunkerton

Tyler Rippel drives toward the basket. An early three-pointer by senior Jordon Womochil gave the Vikings the lead for good against Dunkerton in a non-conference basketball game Tuesday in Vinton. Then after building a 25-10 lead, the Vikes outscored the raiders 20-5 in the last five minutes of the first half. Leading by 30 at the break, the Vikings continued to dominate and won 85-34.
