One year milestone: Cross Country teams to paint windows at Ehlinger's Wednesday

A year ago, Mel Davis and her staff welcomed the Vinton-Shellsburg cross country teams to Ehlinger's Express, where the runners were treated to free supper and hot chocolate and painted the windows to celebrate the accomplishment of earning a trip to State. That tradition continued with other VS teams throughout the past year.

VS boys, girls cross country teams earn trip to State

The Vikette cross country runners perform their team cheer after arriving at the school. Congrats to both the girls and boys Vinton-Shellsburg cross country teams on earning a trip to State! The Vikettes Girls placed 2nd overall (they missed 1st place by 2 points). Lily Horst was 2nd, Gracie Horst 4th, and Bristi Gerber, 8th. The Boys placed 3rd overall; Cole Tharp was 7th, Jonah Blix, 13th. The team arrived in Vinton at Thursday night, escorted by the law enforcement and fire vehicles.

Nets for Vets: Vikettes to honor veterans with game, dinner Nov. 17

The Vinton-Shellsburg girls basketball team will honor area veterans at a local event on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The "Nets for Vets" will include a game between the Vikettes and Belle Plaine. Before the game, there will be a free-will donation barbecue in the VSHS lunchroom/commons from 4-6 p.m.  The JV game starts at 5; the varsity game at 7.

Football Week 9 preview: Benton, Union secure playoff spots

Vinton-Shellsburg will wrap up its 2015 season with the long road trip to Cresco to face Crestwood, just a few miles south of the Minnesota border.  The Vikings and Cadets have identical records (2-6 overall, 1-4 in Class 3A District 3). Football programs throughout the state will learn their new district assignments early in 2016. The 2016 and 2017 schedules will be identical, but the home games the first year will be away games the next.

Viking-Vikette Hall of Fame adds seven more names

HOF: Holly Allpress, Tosha Buckingham Whitson, Melinda Heyer Packebush, Julie Flatberg Lessig They set school records – and even state and at least one national record that has not yet been broken. They excelled in the classroom in sports. And now, they are members of the Viking-Vikette Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame added seven new members on Friday, three individuals and a four-person track relay team. Below is the information shared with the audience during the Hall of Fame presentation that took place during halftime of Friday’s Homecoming game.

Ironmen: Two area residents finish course in Madison

Nick Sagan and Kyle Schminke were among those who finished the Ironmen event in Madison, Wis. Vinton area residents Kyle Schminke and Nick Sagan were among the participants who were able to finish the challenging course at the Ironmen event in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 13. Participants woke up around 3:30 a.m. and began the swimming event at 7 p.m.They swam 2.4 miles, then biked 112 miles and ended the event with a marathon (26.2 miles.

Viking Hall of Fame to add new members Friday

The tradition of adding new members to the Vinton-Shellsburg Hall of Fame continues this year, as several new inductees will be honored during Friday's football game. The new inductees include: Barry Whitson - 1976 Desi Druschel - 1994 Channing (Merchant) Halstead - 2006 4x100 Relay Team – 1991 Holly Allpress Tosha (Buckingham) Whitson Julie (Flatberg) Lessig Melinda (Heyer) Packebush Coach:  John Frazier After the game, a reception will take place at the Vinton County Club (use downstairs entrance).

Amputee inspires other VS Cheerleaders

Kay Mull waves to the crowd during the Fall Blow-Out. She has overcome several health issues. A young girl walked up to Kay Mull, looked at her prosthetic limb, and asked, “How did you change your leg?” Kay, a freshman cheerleader at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, hasn’t let having her leg amputated just below the knee stop her from being active in life, or in school. She has previously competed in volleyball and track and now she performs a variety of cheers in front of hundreds of strangers each week.
