For 25 years, Diane Hesson kept score and statistics at home Vinton-Shellsburg basketball games, an estimated 700+ contests with more than 14,000 individual statistic lists. Diane retired from that job at the end of last season, and on Tuesday evening, the VS community honored her for all those years of documenting shots taken and missed, fouls and points scored.

Several Vinton-Shellsburg girls’ golf team members were successful achievers in the classroom. Each year the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union presents an award for excellence in academic achievement.  These 12 girls were members of the Vinton-Shellsburg 2015 girls’ golf team and achieved a team G.P.A. of 3.567. This award is presented to teams who achieve a 3.

Two Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings won first place at the 8th Annual Jones Brothers Wrestling Invitational in Iowa Falls on Saturday.  Nick Hyland (138) had a first-round bye, continued his undefeated season with two falls and a major decision. His record is now 16-0 this season. Navon Dunlap recorded three falls and a decision to win the 126-pound title.

After dropping their first two contests of the season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings basketball team has its fifth straight game. The Vikings built an early lead at Independence on Friday. They outscored the Mustangs, 16-7, in the first period. In the second, they scored 22 more while holding Independence to 12. A three-pointer by Tyler Rippel and a layup by Cole Smith ended the first-half scoring with the Vikings ahead 38-19.

Four area student-athletes are finishing their final high school year and making plans to compete in their favorite sports on the college level.  The four have signed letters of intent with colleges include: Lauren Tandy Lauren, the daughter of Scott and Melissa Tandy of Vinton, will play golf at Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids. She joined Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf coach Janet Woodhouse and Mt.

When the Cedar Rapids Rampage soccer team hosts the St. Louis Ambush this Saturday, Dec. 19, a group of Shellsburg Elementary 5th graders will sing the National Anthem. Shellsburg Principal Ryan Davis said a dozen fifth graders will sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner" before the 7:05 game at the U.S. Cellular Center as part of Vinton-Shellsburg night.
