Union advances with first-round route of Mt Vernon

The Union Knight motto this year is First Strike. They did strike first and put it in the end zone again and again, building a 56-20 first half lead and defeating Mt. Vernon, 63-20 in first-round playoff action. In a crazy game that featured three kickoff returns in first half for TDs (two by Union, {Scheel, Carey} and one by Mt Vernon) and a punt return for TD (Hadachek) it was a special teams clinic.

Senior Night: Class of 2012 athletes, band members honored

Senior Viking Colton Draker and his parents joined the Senior Night tradition. The Vinton-Shellsburg football season came to an end with Friday' s home loss to Crestwood, 31-14. The game took place in the rain, and the field was already muddy by the start of the varsity game, leaving many uniforms covered with mud by the end of the game. The Vikings end the season 3-6. Senior athletes and band members were introduced, along with their parents, before the varsity game.

VS boys advance to CC State Meet; along with freshmen girls Horst and Gerber

VSHS freshmen Bristi Gerber and Lily Horst advanced to the State Cross Country Meet. The District XC was held Thursday on the Wartburg XC course in Waverly.   In the girls event, VSHS runners Lily Horst took 2nd and Bristi Gerber took 3rd.   Wyatt Lyons took 10th place and overall, the VSHS boys placed 3rd, sending the whole team to the state meet,. Lily and Bristi advanced to the Girls State Cross Country Meet as individuals.

VS swimmers set more records at Charles City

Savannah Jensen, Katie King, Emily Freeland & Lauren Krupa set school record in 200 Freestyle Relay.   Tuesday was yet another record breaking evening as the Vinton-Shellsburg Union lady swimmers continued their season-long assault on the record books. Three more program swimming bests fell in Charles City as the ladies turned in their best team performance of the year in finishing a close third at the annual Charles City Invitational.

NFL rookie sensation had former V-S punter Jay White as college coach

Jay White punts for the VS Alumni team in July. Even though Jay White never made any All-District teams as a kicker/punter for the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, he later taught himself to kick a football so well that he became a Division 2 All-MIAA Conference punter. Now Jay is teaching college kickers and punters how to kick a ball through the uprights or make it soar high and far into the opposing team’s territory.
