A little known game took place here in Vinton last month, when the Ellsworth Community College baseball team played Kirkwood on Oct. 16. The Ellsworth coach is Nate Forsyth, a VS alum.   Nate Forsyth, the Ellsworth head coach, a former Vinton-Shellsurg student, is in his seventh year as the head baseball coach at Ellsworth.     Nate Forsyth, Head Coach In the last six years the Panthers have experienced some tremendous success, highlighted with a third place finish at the 2008 Region XI Tournament and a second place finish in 2010, the highest finish for ECC in 18 years.

  The Iowa Pride Challenge comes to Vinton on Saturday, as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings boys basketball team takes on Xavier. The event is a fund-raiser for both the Iowa Hall of Pride and the Benton County Food Pantry. The JV game begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17; the varsity game at around 6:30. Admission is $3 per person and 1 food item for the Benton County Food Pantry.

Vinton-Shellsburg freshman Lily Horst finished in 9th place in the Class 3A Girls race at the 2012 State Cross Country event in Fort Dodge on Saturday. Bristi Gerber, another freshman, finished 18th. The VSHS boys team, led by Ricky Jaray ( who finished in 30th place), was 13th in the state in Class 3A. See complete results HERE.

Running in the halls was briefly permitted Friday afternoon at Vinton-Shellsburg High Schoo, where the student body stood in the hallway to cheer and offer high fives to the members of the boys cross country team and freshmen girls Lily Hort and Bristi Gerber. Lily and Bristi will compete at noon on Saturday at the Fort Dodge Golf Course, in the Class 3A girls state cross country meet.

Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers raised $7,700 during their annual labor auction Thursday evening. Area residents and  businesses  bid on the services of the wrestlers and managers, with Duane Johnson again serving as auctioneer.  The fund-raiser will help cover the cost of equipment, wrestling camp and other expenses of the program.
