'Inside the Huddle' - Coakley and Co. spoil Knights homecoming, 35-15

By Cheyne Reiter This past Friday night, the Union Knights hosted the 3A District 5 leading Maquoketa Cardinals for homecoming. Union came in at 4-1 (2-1) while Maquoketa was 4-1 (3-0), so a win for the Knights would have spoiled any chances that Maquoketa had of running the table in District 5. Led by quarterback Chase Coakley, halfback Craig Johnson, and a huge defensive line, Maquoketa didn't have much trouble vs.

Down 10-0, Vikes rally for 41-17 Homecoming win

Gunner Tranel bangs past a Raider defender for one of his 4 TDs; he ran for 226 yards.      Down 10-0 halfway through the second quarter, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings used several big offensive plays, a bruising running game by Gunner Tranel and three interceptions by Kelyn Rickels to rally to a 41-17 Homecoming win over Anamosa Friday night.      The game began with miscues by both teams. Holding penalties on scoring plays kept both the Vikings and the Raiders off the scoreboard early.

Olympics in PE mark Homecoming week

Everyday this week in PE there was a different activity. At the end of the week. the points were totaled and these are the champions from each hour! Congratulations!

VS-Union swimmers defeat Waterloo East

VSU senior Abby Getz on her way to winning the 160 individual medley.      The Vinton Shellsburg-Union Swim Team met last week to compete against Waterloo East. VSU won, 77-11.     Winners for VSU included the 160 medley team (Summer Stephenson, Mara Jessen, Jessie Dickerson, Kami Kirchner); Katie King in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle; Abby Getz in the 160 IM; Mara Jessen in the 60 freestyle; Karissa Davis in the 100 butterfly; Javannah Jensen in the 100 freesytle; the 160 freestyle relay (Karissa Davis, Abby Getz, Jessie Dickerson and Savannah Davis); Madison Elwick in the 100 backstroke; Abby Getz in the 100 breaststroke; and the 320 freestyle relay team of Kersten King, Savannah Jensen, Katie King and Madison Elwick.

Season track points winners honored at final BCS race of season

Merv Chandler wins tracks points title           Danny Dvorak won the Sports Mod feature at the Benton County Speedway during the final night of the racing season. He is also the 2011 track points champion. Scott Pippert also won the Hobby Stock race and season track points title honors. Football roundup: Marion shuts out Vikes; Burnside sees few carries in Union win

     After the first three weeks of the season, there are new leaders Class 3A, district 5.      Maquoketa and W. Dubuque are tied at 3-0 in district play, while Marion, Central Clinton and Union are tied at 2-1. Under the tie-breaking system, Marion and Union would be considered the third and fourth place teams.

Tranel leads District in tackles; Vikes travel to Marion tonight

     Vinton-Shellsburg senior Gunner Tranel was the Vikings' leading ball carrier last week, rushing for 145 yards and three of the team's four touchdowns in the loss vs. W. Dubuque.     Tranel has also led the team on defense. He is tied for 20th among all Iowa high schol football players, with 60 total tackles in four games, including 38 solo tackles and 22 assists.
