Scheel leads Union to victory in Maquoketa rematch; Knights heading to UNI-Dome

Two words. Jay Scheel.      The sophomore sensation put on a show tonight in a 21-13 Knight victory, beating the 10-1 Maquoketa Cardinals who beat Union earlier this year, 35-15.      On the Cardinals' opening possession, the game resembled the last matchup very closely. QB Chase Coakley started off a perfect 7-of-7 passing and drove the Cardinals down the field before completing a TD pass to an uncovered receiver.

Coach Hadachek: Tough season, injuries making Knights a better team

In 2010, says Union Football Coach Joe Hadachek, Union "came from nowhere" to complete a regular season without a loss. The undefeated 2010 Knights were Class 3A District Champions heading into first round playoff action. They had home field advantage. The played a team that had already lost four games.      But then, Union lost.

Union players earn All-District, academic honors

Union Head Football Coach Joe Hadachek said it's great news that 12 players have been chosen to the first or second All-District team, but even better news that nine members of the football team have earned All-Academic status.        " That is largest number of Union football players recognized in the last five years for academic success," said Hadachek, who leads the Knights into their quarterfinal Class 3A playoff game tonight.

Union extends season; to host Maquoketa Monday in quarterfinal game

Union knocked off former State Champion Solon, 39-24 Monday night at Solon in high school football playoff action. The Knights will host Class 3A District 5 Champion Maquoketa next Monday, Oct. 7. The Cardinals had defeated Union 35-15 during the regular season.       Three fumble recoveries, an early interception, along with a 95-yard pass and a 54-yard run by QB Jay Scheel were big factors in the win over Solon, which has won a state title in either class 2A or 3A in the past four years.
