VS Cross Country teams begin season at Mt. Vernon

Karley Kinney     The Vinton-Shellsburg freshmen/sophomore girls came in second place in the Mount Vernon-Lisbon invitational, with 53 points. MV-L was first with 33 and Waverly-Shellrock third with 55.     Karley Kenney led the Frsh/soph girls by getting 4th place with a time of 19:19. Olivia Oltragge came in 10th with a time of 20:53.

VS Cross Country team begins season with team dinner at Jorgensens'

Coach Frazier dishes up the sauce for Srs. Emma Horst and Danesha Pladsen       It's been a tradition for the past several years for coach John Frazier and the Vinton-Shellsburg cross country team.      Both the boys and girls gather together at the Jorgensen house for a meal the night before their first contest of the season.     The first meet is tonight, in Mount Vernon.

Pippert wins 12th checkered flag at BCS; Lauritzen joins winners in Victory Lane

Vikings play for muffler during Blowout event

Gunner Tranel (with the muffler) and other Black Squad members pose with the victory trophy.        In two weeks, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings will play for a chance to ring the V-S Victory Bell.     Next week, they will open their season in Van Horne, where they will play for bragging rights and a chance to avenge last year's 21-7 loss.     In a few weeks, they hope to be playing to earn a spot in the post-season.

Fall Blow-Out to include athletes in grades 7-12

     The Vinton-Shellsburg Fall Sports Blowout is FRIDAY NIGHT. The Blowout starts  at 5 p.m. with the FR/SO FB team scrimmage game, followed by introduction of athletes (4th-12th),  concluding with the varsity scrimmage game. Admission is one sport drink (Gatorade, Powerade, etc.) which will be used for our athletes this fall.

Viking gridiron practice has one goal: Championship football

Sophomore backfield members work on pitch drills Thursday.      With the sounds from the horns and drums of the marching band echoing around them, the members of the 2011 Vinton-Shellsburg Viking football team continued practicing as they approach their season opener in 15 days at Benton Community.      "Our goal is championship football," head coach Pat Farley told his players as they worked on some blocking drills Thursday morning.

Benton County Speedway coloring contest winners announced

The winners of the Benton County Speedway coloring contest.   Drivers weren't the only ones competing for the top spot at the Benton County Speedway on Sunday, August 7.   It was decision night for the Speedway's annual coloring contest, which awarded a combined total of over $150 in prizes. Trophy winners collected a bag of loot, including skating or mini-golf passes to the Vinton Skate and Activity Center, Palace Bucks for the Vinton Palace Theater and Vinton Value Dollars courtesy of Vinton Unlimited.

VPRD Kids Triathlon winners listed

The winners of the Triathlon pose for a photo.       The youngsters swam, biked and ran (in that order) their way to the finish line. The Kids Triathlon took place at the Vinton Swimming Pool and surrounding roads on the morning of Saturday, July 30th.      The distances required for each event differered depending on their age group. The time, place and required distances of the partipants can be found in the attached "Triathlon Results.
