After dressing in black and waving gold Spirit Towels during last Friday's game, the Vinton-Shellsburg football fans dressed in brightly-colored clothes for Friday night's game. Hundreds of neon green T-shirts had been made and ordered (and extras are available at the Black & Gold Shop at LaGrange Pharmacy). Those who already have an older neon shirt of any color were encouraged to wear them as the Vikings host Oelwein in the district opener.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Cross Country teams finished fourth (boys) and sixth (girls) at Grinnell on Tuesday evening. Lily Horst led the VS girls, finishing 4th, while Ricky Jeray was the first Viking runner to cross the finish line, in 19th place overall.
"The heat was on," says coach John Fraier. "The competition was fierce. We finished strong and we will welcome the cooler temps this weekend at Benton.

Vinton’s Scott Hogan won the feature in the Modifieds class at the Benton County Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 2. Sports Mod winner Mike Hogancamp celebrated his first trip to Victory Lane. Other winners the feature races at the Benton County Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 2, included:

A stout field of 111 teams filled the pit area for Budweiser Season Championship Night at Independence Motor Speedway. A trio of drivers topped off track championships by taking home feature wins on the final night of the 2012 season.
Drivers were lined up straight-up based on season point totals for the championship events, with five laps added to those features.

The Vinton-Shellsburg football team heads into district play next week with a 1-1 record following Friday's loss at home to South Tama.
The Viking offense struggled throughout the first half, as the Trojans built a 27-0 lead. Max Griffith and Tanner Spies scored the Vikings touchdowns on passes from Grant Sagan. Sagan and Chase Overton shared QB duties until Overton was injured late in the second quarter.

Williamsburg beat Vinton-Shellsburg on the volleyball court at VSHS on Thursday evening, 3-1.

The Vikette Tournament begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Other teams competing will include: Alburnett, Dike-New Hartford CSD, Janesville, Jesup Community Schools, Union and West Delaware.

Scott Merchant said his original goal with the gold Spirit Towels was to have enough to give to every student at Vinton-Shellsburg High School.
"We've been trying to encourage more students to attend the games," said Merchant this morning.
But the sponsors with whom Merchant shared his ideas wanted to do even more; they have paid for 1,000 towels, which will be distributed both to students and to adults attending tonight's game.

On Monday, Aug. 27, the South West Community College (SWCC) Spartan volleyball team, which includes 2012 VS graduate Ashley Strong, kicked off their season by travelling to Southeast Nebraska Community Collegein Beatrice, NE.After dropping the first two games 14-25 and 13-25, the Spartans rallied to take the final three games 25-21, 29-27, and 15-12.

The VSHS XC boys team took First place with a team score of 53 points Tues night at Williamsburg.
Girls varsity team placed 4th out of a total of 9 teams.
All the VSHS teams represented our school well!

Vinton race car driver Scott Hogan won the feature Saturday, Aug. 25, in Burlington. Also he was the 34 RACEWAY. IMCA modified 2012 track Champion .
