Benton County Speedway Alzheimer's Awareness Night‏ a Success

  After mother nature's win the past two weeks, the Benton County Speedway was able to return to racing action Sunday, August 26th. The twice postponed Alzheimer's Awareness night, coupled with Halloween in August, raised over $1,200 for the local Alzheimer's Association. A special thank you is sent to everyone who participated in bidding on silent auction items, and those who donated items for the auction, including: Brian Parr, the local Alzheimer's Support group, the Palace Theater, Boomtown, Frontier Natural Products & Aura Cacia, Vinton Parks & Recreation Department, Tom & Carilyn Engledow, Albert & Lynette Muschaweck, Steve & Jayma Runyan, IMCA Racing, G&G Auto, Koop's Automotive, Dan Engledow and Tina Hasselmann.

Womochil era begins with big win on Benton's new turf

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings began the era of coach Jim Womochil with a big win on the kind of field he envisions for his home turf, and the kind of offense that includes “passing when we want to, not when we have to.” The Vikings defeated Benton Community 48-0, on the new turf at Van Horne. The Benton Community project (including the turf and all-weather track) cost more than $1 million; Womochil said finding funding for such a field in Vinton is part of his five-year plan for the Viking program.

AYSO soccer team wraps us 12U season

The 12U AYSO V-S soccer team held its wrap-up recently at Tootsie's.   The Vinton-Shellsburg AYSO boys soccer team held their season wrap-up at Tootsie’s Ice Cream and More, where they often went after games. The U12 boys finished undefeated in pool play and fourth overall in this year’s tournament. Freshman Lily Horst wins first high school cross country meet

Familiar sight: VSHS freshman Lily Horst won her first high school cross country race. For most of her middle school cross country career, Lily Horst has come in first when competing with runners in her grade level.  She won the WaMaC meets in both seventh and eighth grade, and also set some track records. She also won a recent 5K race in Vinton, competing against women of all ages. Now, the VSHS freshman has won her first high school cross country race.

Cross Country season begins with annual meal at Jorgensen's

Cross Country runners enjoyed a picnic the night before their first contest of the season. Tonight the Vinton-Shellsburg boys and girls cross country teams will travel to Mount Vernon to compete in the first cross country meet of the season. Last night, the team held its traditional gathering in the back yard of Pat and Nancy Jorgensen. The runners joined coach Frazier for a barbecue followed by a team photo. 

Soccer ball says thanks to VS school board, administration

Soccer players Marshall Mullinex & Cody Sojka presented a ball to Sue Gates and Supt. Hainstock. Two Vinton-Shellsburg High School  students made an unusual presentation during the VS School Board meeting Monday: A soccer ball. The members of the first VSHS boys soccer team signed the ball, which includes a team photo, and presented it to the ball to thank the board and school administrators for supporting the program which began last year.

Blowout: Viking football players prepare; other teams introduced

A defender brings down a Viking runner. In just four days, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings get their first test of the Coach Jim Womochil era when they travel to Van Horne for the traditional V-S/Benton Community season opener.  The Vikings prepared for this contest during a scrimmage during the Friday night Blowout. In addition to seeing all of the high school players scrimmage on the field, the audience also met the members of the other fall VSHS sports teams, including cross country, volleyball and swimming.
