A View from the Grandstands

Ron Lauritzen Welcome to another round of Views from the Grandstands from Benton County Speedway.  It was a hot night for racing as the show wrapped up the 2011 Benton County Fair.  My caps off to all of the individuals who helped get the grounds in shape after last week's devastating storm in the Vinton area.  Anyway onto the show. The first feature tonight was the IMCA Hobby Stock class with 13 cars on hand to fight on teh 1/4-mile bullring.

He wasn't the fastest, but he was first

He didn’t have the fastest car, but Jerry Luloff was in front when the checkers flew for Sunday’s Hogan Memorial IMCA Modified main event at Benton County Speedway.  The beneficiary of a caution with four laps left, Luloff passed race-long leader Scott Hogan and held on to the finish to earn the top prize of $1,350, plus $200 in lap money and a spot on the ballot for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Solon player honored by teammates in Vinton recovering from leukemia

Solon players honored teammate Brett Smith in Vinton in February; he is now in remission.        When the Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team hosted Solon in February, the event was more about cancer than basketball. It was Pink Night, part of the combined boys and girls events to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.     While most V-S fans were aware of the cancer theme and the pink socks worn by the players that winter night, what they did not know was that the Solon players -- and their parents and fans in the visitors' section -- had also recently begun dealing with cancer.

VS Alumni Football to play Friday at Center Point

Randy Scheel is already losing sleep, and the rest of the members of the first Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Footbal team are excited for this Friday, July 8 against neighbor and rival Center Point-Urbana.      The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10; half of the proceeds will benefit Vinton-Shellsburg.      The Vikings' squad consists of former players from three decades of graduating classes.

V-S teams struggle on Van Horne diamonds; Benton wins 3 of 4

Paige Kreutner takes a high pitch for a ball vs. Benton.     The Vinton-Shellsburg fans in the visitors bleachers in Van Horne Tuesday evening could look at the baseball scoreboard in the fifth inning of the first game vs. Benton Community, and see that the home team was ahead 7-2, in the fifth inning. Some of them could also see beyond the left field fence, where the softball scoreboard had the same numbers in the same places: Home 7, Visitors, 2, fifth inning.
