Vikings win several events in Early Bird meet, finish 4th

     The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team finished fourth in its Early Bird meet Friday in Vinton.      The Vikings earned 89 points, behind Dubuque Wahlert, Solon, and Western Dubuque. Union Finished fifth and Benton Community, sixth.      Several V-S athletes won varsity events.      Jason Kirk won the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.

Benton County Speedway opens with April 3 Frostbuster special

The first green flag of the season flies at Benton County Speedway this Sunday, April 3, when five IMCA divisions converge at Vinton for the traditional Frostbuster special. The IMCA Modified feature pays $1,000 to win and is a qualifying event for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods for $400, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $250 and Mach-1 Sport Compacts for $150.

Winter Athletics Achieve Academic Recognition @ V-S HS!

  During each activity season in Iowa, high school students are not only recognized for their accomplishments as performers or as athletes, but also recognized for their efforts in the classroom. The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is proud of the efforts our students put forth in the classroom. During the winter 2010-11 activity season, the following teams or groups have achieved state-wide academic recognition for their efforts.

2nd Annual Benton County Speedway Car Show

First Avenue was filled with race cars and fans for the annual pre-season car show Sunday.   A cold but sunny Sunday greeted over 20 race teams and scores of fans to the streets of Vinton for the second annual Benton County Speedway Car Show, sponsored by the RonDaVoo Lounge & Deli and Vinton Unlimited. Over 170 drivers and fans voted for their favorite car in the IMCA Modified, Stock Car, Hobby Stock, SportMod and Sport Compact divisions.

Pickleball Winners

Hunter Vogt and Max Kearns Here are the champions from this trimester for Pickleball!      (Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings Junior Co-Ed basketball team comes home with the gold

The Gold Medal Winning Vinton-Shellsburg team and the silver medal winning team from Atlantic.                  The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings Junior Co-Ed basketball team came home with the gold Saturday.  Special Olympics Iowa held its annual Mid-Winter Games at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse in Iowa City.  The Vikes won a tight matchup against the Warriors from Atlantic by a score of 42 to 34.

Vinton-Shellsburg 5th Grade Viking Boys Basketball team completes a great season

  The Vinton-Shellsburg 5th Grade Viking Boys Basketball team completed a successful season this past month.  During the season, the team won two tournaments and finished second in three others for a 14-5 record overall.   A big thank you goes to coaches Todd Bohnsack, Stu Overton and Brad Bartz for their many hours working with the boys.

     The Vinton-Shellsburg middle school basketball team has had a successful season.
