Upcoming Adult Coed Softball League Registration

In just a little over a week, the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department will begin its Adult Coed Softball League. If you are interested in putting together a team for the league, you must have your registration submitted by Friday, August 3rd. Registration forms are available online at www.vprdzone.comor by visiting the Vinton Recreation Center.

Vikette athletes Strong, Randall receive post-season honors

Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes Ashley Strong (softball) and Erin Randall (golf) have received honors after enjoying successful seasons. Strong, a 2012 VS graduate, was named to the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union Class 4A Northeast All-District Team as well as the Third-Team All-State Team. She will play softball and vollleyball at Southwest Community College next year.

Schmidt, Burbridge among dirt track winners Sunday in Vinton

Area Racers compete at Independence Motor Speedway

  Travis Smock and Adam Johnson are getting dialed in at just the right time. Both drivers will be taking back-to-back wins into the final month of the season at Independence Motor Speedway.   Smock, who topped the 25-lap IMCA Late Model feature, earned his third win of the season, while Johnson’s second straight win in the IMCA Modifieds was his third victory in the last four weeks and his fourth win of the year.

World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to Indee Speedway August 6

  For the second consecutive year, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will invade Independence Motor Speedway. The event, which pays $10,000 to the winner, will be held Monday, August 6, and is the only Iowa stop for the series this season.   The nation’s top touring Late Model drivers will compete through time trials and qualifying races for a spot in the Dirt Late Model Magazine 50.

Area Golfers place in competition

Tyler Stueck & Lauren Tandy placed in the CR Junior Optimist Golf tourney   The Cedar Rapids Junior Optimist Golf tourney was held on Monday, July 23rd, at Ellis Golf Course.    Due to extreme heat conditions the tourney was taken from an 18 hole event to a 9 hole event.  In the Boys 13-14 division Tyler Stueck placed 1st out of 25 boys with a 3 over 39.  In the girls 15-18 division Erin Randall placed 2nd out of 6 girls with a 43.

Dick Frye Memorial featured at Indee Speedway

  For the sixth consecutive year at Independence Motor Speedway, the weekly racing program during the Buchanan County Fair was held in honor of longtime fairboard president Dick Frye. Frye, who passed away in 2007, was president of the Buchanan County Fair Association for over 40 years and dedicated much of his time to the community through his role on the fairboard.

Lauren Tandy first, Tyler Stueck fifth in CR Optimist Jr. Golf Tourney

On Wednesday, July 18 Vinton golfers Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck played in the Cedar Rapids Optimist Junior golf tournament at Jones Park. Tyler shot a 88 on 18 holes and placed 5th in his age division. Lauren shot a 49 on 9 holes and placed 1st in her age division.
