State Champs:Vinton 12U Black A team wins Silver Division baseball title

The Vinton 12U team poses with their state tourney trophies. The 12U Black "A" boys baseball team traveled to Des Moines this past weekend to play in the USSSA Baseball State Tournament.  After a tough loss to Carlisle, the team battled back to tie one and beat 3 and go on to win the Silver Division State Championship.  Congrats to the 12U  Black "A" baseball team and their coaches! "As temperatures reached the mid 90’s, they battled teams from the Des Moines metro area as well as Eastern Iowa teams.

Benton County Speedway winners include Roster, Brown, Dvorak

HS baseball: Vikings defeat Hudson, 14-4

Viking pitcher Luke Moen struggled early, as walks and an error helped Hudson jump to a 4-0 lead on the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball field Wednesday evening.  But the sophomore settled down to pitch four scoreless innings and the Viking offense came alive in an 8-run third. The Vikings scored six more in the last inning of play. A single by Darren Charlier drove in a run to end the game by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth, 14-4.

IMCA Late Models to make 25th appearance at Independence

  Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models to make 25th appearance at Independence The nation’s longest-running Late Model touring series will be making its 25th visit to Independence Motor Speedway this summer. Now in its 26th season, the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models will invade the 3/8-mile oval on Monday, July 2.

Youth Soccer Camp July 16-19

The annual Youth Soccer Camp will be held July 16-19 at 6-8 pm (MOnday thru Thursday). All kids ages 5-12 are welcome to attend. The event will be held at the Braille School Soccer Field. Alumni Football returns to area; CPU wins on Vikings' field

Jordan Otdoerfer receives the offensive player of the year award for the Viking alumni. For the first time since the fall of 1995, Bonnie Sanders sat in the stands at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, watching her son, Jason, play football.  Yeah, she said, it's different now. The biggest difference: Sitting next to Jason's kids.  Gary Garwood last suited up in a Viking uniform 20 Octobers before Sanders. The 1976 graduate -- who received the "Oldest Player" medal after the game -- paused in between games to wave at his grandson in the stands.

Alumni football game tonight: Vikings ready, says captain

Although the 2012 Vinton-Shellsburg Alumni Football Team includes a member of the Class of 1976 (Gary Garwood), overall the team is younger than last year's, says Captain Randy Scheel (class of 1983). The team is better-prepared last year, with younger, faster players and two quarterbacks, said Scheel.  "After 1976 and 1983, there are many years before the next player," said Scheel.

Alumni Football helps raise funds for Iowa schools; Vikings prepare for Saturday

VS Alumni Football: Viking Logan Merchant mows the lines of the field.   The Alumni Football program has already raised nearly $20,000 for Iowa high schools and their athletic programs, says Jason Chance of Alumni Football USA. Chance expects that amount to triple as more games -- including Saturday's contest in Vinton -- take place this summer. "Last year, we had six alumni games in Iowa," said Chance.

Father's Day drawing at the races this weekend!
