Benton defeats Vikings to advance to Sub-State baseball game
Benton Community came to Vinton Monday night, having defeated every team it has played this year – with the exception of a season-opening loss to Class 4A Iowa City West.
The Bobcats (33-7) defeated the Vikings 7-1 to advance to the Substate contest Wednesday in Solon. That game begins at 7 p.m. in Vinton. Benton’s losses all occurred in double headers in which the Bobcats won the other game. Hawaiian and Fuzzy Friends Night at Benton County Speedway July 22

The Benton County Speedway will host Hawaiian and Fuzzy Friends night on Sunday, July 22. Fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts and bring supplies for Friends of the Shelter that night. Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing for a gas grill provided by Mike & Susan Benson, Judy Burkey, Ryan Clark and Lon's Plumbing & Heating.
July 14 program rained out at Independence Motor Speedway
After 10 consecutive Saturdays of racing, Mother Nature finally had her way as heavy rains forced the cancellation of the July 14 racing program at Independence Motor Speedway.
The program was scheduled to be Independence Area Chamber of Commerce Night. For those who bought tickets in advance specifically for Saturday’s Chamber of Commerce race, details concerning the rescheduling of the event will be made available at www.

Gustin wins Hogan Memorial in Vinton
Richie Gustin worked the high side past Dan Chapman, then held off persistent challenges from Chapman and Jerry Luloff to drive to the IMCA Modified win in the 18th annual Hogan Memorial Sunday at Benton County Speedway.
For his efforts, Gustin earned $1,250 for winning the race, in addition to $250 for leading at halfway and $1,650 in lap money for the 33 circuits he led. Viking 11U team end season with tourney win
The 11U Viking Baseball team wrapped up their season by winning the PST League Tournament this past weekend with a 11-7 victory over the Prairie Hawks. The team went 4-1 during the tournament and outscored their opponents 63-26 in the five games. Scott Betterton pitched a complete game in the championship while Riley Deklotz and Keegan Thompson led the Vikings by scoring 7 of the 11 runs in the finale. Starting in mid-July, VPRD will begin its NEW Sandpit Volleyball League! There will be a coed league that will play on Sunday late afternoons / early evenings and a women's league that will play Wednesday nights. If you are interested in forming a team, please have your registration form turned into us by Thursday, July 5th. League play will tentatively begin the week of July 15th at the Riverside Park sandpit courts.
News from the Speedway
No more than a car-length separated Jeff Aikey and Ray Guss Jr. for much of the 40-lapper, but that’s all Aikey needed when the checkers waved in the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models at Independence Motor Speedway.
Aikey, who took charge two laps following a lap 10 restart, held off Guss in thrilling fashion to score his first series win of the season and his second straight at Independence.
VS 11 & 12 year old girls place 2nd in 4X100 Relay
At the State Hershey Track Meet in Marshalltown, the Vinton-Shellsburg 11-12 year old girls took home 2nd place in the 4x100 relay race. They led their heat with their personal best time of 1:01.96. The winners of the second heat were the only ones to beat them with a time of 1:00.92.
Members of the 4x100 team were Sara Schminke, Taylor Spies, Libbie Timmerman and Olivia Coder.
