Viking alum Miller wins Iowa Conference shot put event

Former Viking Phil Miller won the Iowa Conference shot put event on Friday for Central College. PELLA -- Phil Miller, a 2008 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate and a senior member of the Central College track team, has won the shot put event in the Iowa  Conference Outdoor meet. The shot put competition took place Friday in Dubuque, during the two-day event. Miller's 55-feet even  performance set a new record and  was five feet better than the second-place finisher; he now seems headed for the National Championships in California May 24-26.

Vikette golfers compete today in Districts; finish 4th at S. Tama

  The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes traveled to Ames Sunday night, where they stayed overnight in a hotel to prepare for today's District golf tournement there. On Saturday, they competed at South Tama. Soph Rippel leads Viking golfers at WaMaC Super Meet

Dylan Rippel made second-team all conference with a 79 (14th place), leading the Vinton-Shellsburg boys golf team at the WaMaC Super Meet Monday at Solon "I am very proud of him.  He worked very hard all last summer to improve his game, and it is paying off," says Viking Coach Scott Tandy. Vikette 8th graders win home track meet

Chloe Osborne carries the baton for the first-place 8th grade Vikette 4 x 800 team. The Vinton-Shellburg Middle School 8th grade girls won their home meet, the Little Vikette Invitational, on Tuesday evening. The Vikettes scored 136 team points, 37 more than second-place Monticello. Bristi Gerber led the Vikettes with 16 individual points. Illinois driver Waterman wins Dirt Tour main event in Vinton

  VINTON – The first out-of-state driver to win a JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour main event was the winner when the IMCA Modified series opened Tuesday night at Benton County Speedway.  Quincy, Ill., hotshoe Jeff Waterman drew the pole and ran at the front all 30 laps, beating J.D. Auringer to the checkers by a car length after two of the race’s three caution flags wiped out big leads.

'85 grad Jim Womochil gives up opportunity at ISU to lead VS football team

Jim Womochil has been working for Paul Rhoads at Iowa State University since December. But the 1985 Vinton graduate and former Viking and UNI Panther football player is giving up the college coaching opportunity to return to his hometown. Womochil will replace Patrick Farley as the VS head football coach, and will also teach social studies, history and psychology at VSHS.

VSHS Soccer: Vikings get first team win

Will Hancock (11) high-fives Jake Milroy after Milroy scored. The Vinton-Shellsburg High School boys soccer team, one of the first-year teams in Iowa this year, is celebrating its first win. The Vikings defeated Independence Tuesday evening in Vinton. The Vikings built a 5-0 lead then held on to win, 6-3.  See the team's Quick Stats page HERE. Former Vikette Shelby Beyer places in three events for UNI

4 x 100 handoff: VS alum Shelby Beyer receives the baton from a teammate. UNI freshman and 2011 VS graduate Shelby Beyer enjoyed success throughout her freshman year on the UNI track team. Shelby's mom, Dawn, reports that Shelby's last track meet was at the Messersmith Invitational at UNI last Friday. Her 4x100 relay team came in 3rd, she came in 7th in the 100m and 9th in the 200m. "Her freshman year went great and flew by so fast!" said Dawn.

WaMaC girls golf: Vikettes sixth, Natalie Ketchen earns honorable mention

The V-S Girls Golf team finished in sixth place in the WAMAC conference Super Meet at Gardner Golf Course (par 72), on May 7.
