Vikings win Williamsburg track meet

The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team edged out Solon, winning the Williamsburg meet with 140 points on Tuesday. "I was very happy with they way that we competed," said Coach Aric Chvala. " We didn't win a lot of races but we fought hard for every spot and in the end if we would have given up any spot in any race it would have come out different in the end.

NASCAR driver Ken Schrader coming to Benton County Speedway

NASCAR veteran Ken Shrader's 2012 schedule includes this Sunday in Vinton, as well as NASCAR races. An early season special brings NASCAR favorite Ken Schrader to Ben­ton County Speedway for the April 8 Frostbuster.  Schrader will race an IMCA Modified in the Sunday show at Vinton, joining BCS regulars and a host of Frostbuster visitors in pursuit of a $1,000 top prize. The winner becomes a candidate for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Brian's View from the Grandstand: Week 1 of 2012 season at Vinton

Stock car winner Damon Murty   Welcome to another views from the grandstands.  The first racing event of the season took place tonight at the Benton County Speedway.  Dvorak Construction sponsored the night’s activities and before I start, I want to tip my hat to Janice with the Lil Racer Car Club.  For those of you that do not know, the Lil Racer Car Club was founded a few years ago by Mitch Swinton of Lone Tree, and was formed to help get the kids involved in racing.

Vinton 8th graders earn spot in AAU State volleyball tourney

These VS 8th graders earned a trip to the State AAU Volleyball Tourney.   The 8th Grade AAU Volleyball Team from Vinton finished their 2012 season with a trip to State in Des Moines this past weekend. The girls took first place in the Apgar 8th Grade AAU Volleyball Tournament in Marshalltown to advance to State. They placed third in their pool at state, splitting matches with the first and second place teams.

Rickels, Charlier earn first place for Vikings at Tipton track meet

  Led by gold medalists Kelyn Rickels (high jump) and Darrin Charlier (long jump), the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings finished fifth in team scoring at Tipton Tuesday evening. Other top finishers for the Vikings included: Second place: 4x 800 relay (Max Griffith, Nolan Sagan, Tanner Spies, Wyatt Lyons) Third place: Wyatt Lyons 1600 M Third Place: Nolan Sagan, 800 M "You never know what to expect from the first full meet of the year," said coach Aric Chvala.

Alumni Football practice begins April 1

  The first official practice of the Viking Alumni Football team will be held this Sunday, April 1, at 6 p.m. at the practice field just north of the high school football field. We will take Easter Sunday off (April 8) before resuming regular practices every Sunday at 6pm until the game. We may also add in a second practice each week with a day and time to be determined.

WaMaC Champs: Barnes wins 55m; Leonard first in 400

Peyton Leonard and Cheyenne Barnes were WaMac champions in the 55m and 400m events. Cheyenne Barnes was the 55m indoor WAMAC champ on Monday, at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.  She was also runner up in the 200.  Peyton Leonard was the 400 WAMAC indoor champ. Pee Wee Mini Sports helps young players learn the basics

Cash Peterson and Jade Pohlmann learn how to kick soccer ball to the goal. Several area youngsters are learning the basics of basketball, soccer and baseball each Monday through the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department Pee Wee Mini-Sports program. Brad Barker coaches the children in how to catch, throw and hit a baseball, as well as how to dribble with their hands (basketball) and feet (soccer). The sessions also include lessons on passing a basketball and fielding ground balls, as well as other fundamentals of the games many of these boys and girls will play later in life, in VPRD or school programs.

Pickleball season at VS

1st hour is Courtney Roster, Erica Engbretson Shown are the winners of the Pickleball tournament at VS. (Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Work nearly complete on Lions field; teams asked to use Kiwanis diamonds for now

Spring fever is in the air and to the delight of many, that means that softball season is right around the corner! The Vinton Parks and Recreation Department made major renovations to Lions Field last fall, including the installation of a new infield and drain tiles, a restructured batters box and pitching area, and other diamond amenities.
