Sophomores come from behind for win, but VS varsity loses to Marion, 35-7
Down 20-12 halfway through the fourth quarter, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings sophomore team inspired the Homecoming crowd with two big plays to tie and win the game.
First, Josh Ferguson intercepted a Marion pass and returned it for a touchdown. After forcing the Indians to punt, the Vikings took the lead on a long run by Chris Merchant. Punt Pass and Kick winners advance to State Contest
This past Saturday, September 18th, a dozen Vinton youth ages 8 through 12 fought the dreary morning weather to see who could punt, pass and placekick a football the farthest.
This event was held at the V/S high school football field and hosted by the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department.
The winner in each age group and gender will now have the opportunity to participate in the State Finals on Saturday, October 16, at the Iowa State University Football Indoor Practice Facility in Ames.
Vikings suffer first district loss at Western Dubuque, 33-22
The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings went to Farley, hoping to extend their winning streak to three games.
But Western Dubuqueplayers celebrated Parents Night by defeating the Vikings 33-22.
The Bobcats scored first as they kept the Vikings from getting a first down in their first two possessions.
After two Vikings punts, the Bobcats scored on a 50-yard-drive, getting their first touchdown on a short pass.
Vikings tied atop 3A District 5; travel to Western Dubuque tonight
After week one of District football action, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are tied at the top of the Class 3A District 5. Marion, Union and DeWitt Central also have identical 1-0 records.
Tonight, in the second week of District competition, the Vikings travel to Central Dubuque (0-1, 1-2). Undefeated Union hosts DeWitt Central (1-0, 1-2).
VS sophomores begin football season with 2-1 record
The Vinton-Shellsburg Viking sophomores begin their season with a 2-1 record.

Week 1: VS 36, BC 0
The Benton Community game in Vinton was 36 – 0, Vinton Shellsburg. We played well on special teams and had a great game on defense. We had some big plays from some good players.
Vikings third, Vikettes sixth at Bobcat Invitational Cross Country meet.
The V-S boys cross-country team finished third place at the Bobcat Invitational Saturday, while the V-S girls finished in sixth place.
Liz Fischer finished 25th for V-S, while Karley Kenney finished in 31st to lead the V-S girls.
The top Viking finishers included: Ricky Jeray, Cory Mayhew, Sam Martin, Parker Oltrogge, and Matt Pettengill. Second place finish for both V-S boys, girls at South Tama
Both of Coach John Fraziers V-S varsity teams finished second at Trojan Invitational cross country meet Monday in Toledo.
The Vikettes came in second behind Grinnell, as five V-S girls finished in the Top 20.
The top Vikette runners included:

Vinton firefighter Josh Geiger only gets out his golf clubs and heads for the fareways and greens once a year.
Last Friday, his annual golf game brought a “one in a million” shot.

The Vinton-Shellsburg sophomores came from behind against Maquoketa on Friday, winning 8-7, in Vinton.
The visiting Cardinals had a chance to win the game in the final minute, but Viking Max Griffith intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal the victory for the Vikings.

As the Vinton Viking football players of 1959 gathered near the field before Friday's game between Vinton-Shellsburg and Maquoketa, someone asked one of the players from that team if he had any advice for the 2010 Vikings.
"They need to win," was the reply. "Or else a lot of people will be mad."
The Vikings fell behind early, 14-0, after an interception was returned for a touchdown to give Maqoketa an early lead.
