Golfers get final rounds in before winter weather arrives
Monday was not a great day for golf, either the weather or the results, said one of several players who wore jackets, caps with ear covers and other warm apparel on Monday.
But, he said, it's much better than not playing golf at all.
With snow in other parts of Iowa, a few groups of golf enthusiasts played a round on Monday, despite the chill and the strong winds which made the weather feel worse and complicated their driving game. Volleyball League Scores and Standings

Union season ends with playoff loss to Clear Creek-Amana
Several times throughout the 2010 season, the Union Knights found themselves behind. But they always found a way to win.
But their nine-game winning streak ended in first round play-off action Wednesday night. The Knights lost, 22-15, to Clear Creek Amana on a cold, windy night.

The Union football team, undefeated champions of District 5 in Class 3A, hope begin their playoff season tonight. The Knights host Clear Creek-Amana at 7:30 p.m. Although CCA is 5-4 on the season, they play in the tough District 6 that includes Solon and Williamsburg, two of the top teams in the state.
If Union wins tonight, their next two opponents will likely include Solon, Williamsburg, or both. Hogan wins Regional title; fifth in IMCA National points
VINTON – Nine feature wins and bonus points from a pair of track titles paved the way for Scott Hogan’s career first IMCA Modified regional crown.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings traveled to Union Friday night with a 4-4 record and needing a win to extend their season into the playoffs.
Coach Farley and his team went to La Porte with a simple strategy: Keep the ball, use up lots of clock and keep the ball out of the hands of the Union offense and record-setting running back Wes Burnside. 6th grade Viking Gold team finishes 5-1 in Metro League
The 6th Grade Viking Gold football team completed its 2010 season with a 5-1 record in the Metro Youth Football League.
The team is 10-2 over the past two years playing mostly 4-A schools in the league.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings came into Friday's game vs. DeWitt Central in third place in the Class 3A District 5 football standings, needing a win to secure a spot in the playoffs that begin Oct. 27.
But the Sabers took three 14-point leads and were able to hold off the Vikings in the final quarter, defeating V-S by a score of 36-27
The Sabers took an early lead, but a 56-yard run run by Logan Williams followed by a 26-yard pass from Lincoln Riffey to John Lippman gave the Vikings a 15-14 edge. Vikings in third place in District 5; could guarantee playoff spot tonight
The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are in third place in Class 3A, District 5, with two weeks left on the regular-season schedule.
A win by the Vikings tonight virtually assures them of spot in the post-season action that begins Wednesday, Oct. 27.
Undefeated District 5 leaders Union and Marion play tonight, with the winner likely to be the District Champion.
